Neha Rungta announced finalist for Google Anita Borg Scholarship

Neha, originally from Mumbai, India, graduated Magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science from BYU in December 2004. Since that time she has done research in guided search heuristics in software verification and is actively involved in BYU’s Women in CS Club, a group she organized.

The forty-seven scholarship finalists were chosen by a Google review committee after a rigorous analysis of applicant transcripts, letters of recommendation, short essays, and leadership histories. The finalists were interviewed by members of the committee before the scholarship recipients were selected.

In April finalists were invited to Google headquarters in Mountain View, California for a two-day networking retreat. The retreat included workshops with a series of guest speakers, panel discussions, breakout sessions, and social activities. Twenty-eight of the finalists, including Neha, were awarded a $1,000 scholarship at a banquet during the retreat. Nineteen students among the group walked away with the $10,000 award.

The scholarship was named for Anita Borg (1949-2003), a pioneer in the movement to increase women’s influence in the technology industry. After discovering her love for computers in her mid-twenties, Anita led a brilliant research career for some of industry's commercial giants.

In 1997 she founded the Institute for Women and Technology and in 1999 President Clinton appointed her to the Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering and Technology. In 2002 she received the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment.
