How to Build Visibility

You want to attract students who fit your corporation's needs and lifestyle. Students want to hear your company's message right from the source before they select the job that's right for them. BYU and the Computer Science Department give companies an opportunity to convey this message face to face.

Presentations and Lectures

Information Sessions

BYU plays host to companies who want to communicate their name and mission to prospective employees. Your company is invited to schedule campus rooms and services for information sessions. Career Placement Services will also publicize the event to the types of students you are looking for. If you are interested in setting up an information session, contact Jana Atwood at (801) 422-9058 or jana_atwood@byu.edu.

Talmage Building Booths

In exchange for a $500 donation to the department's scholarship fund, companies may advertise internship and employment opportunities to Computer Science students by setting up a table in the first-floor foyer of the Talmage Building for up to five hours on a given day.  Available dates and times are limited.  If you are interested in participating in an event of this type, please contact Kiersten Nielsen.

Career Seminars

Individuals involved in the computer science industry are often asked to give students an inside look at career possibilities in the industry. Presenters are invited to tell students about their jobs and what it is like to work at their company. They also acquaint students with relevant issues in the market. If you are interested in coming to present about your job at a Career Seminar, please contact Kiersten Nielsen.

Research Colloquia

Every week during the academic school year, noted researchers come to present their groundbreaking research in the field. If you are interested in presenting at a research colloquium, please contact Dr. Eric Ringger.

Mentoring

Resumé Writing Sessions

As students prepare for the bi-annual career fairs, the department or college may hold résumé writing sessions where recruiters and alumni come and help students prepare their résumés. The session allows students to get an idea of what recruiters look for in a résumé and recruiters and alumni get an opportunity to mentor. Email Kiersten Nielsen or call (801) 422-9439 if you are interested in participating in a résumé writing session.

Mock Interviews

Mock interviews give students an opportunity to experience the kinds of questions and problems that they will have to answer in an interview for programming occupations. Students learn to think on their feet and apply the principles that they have learned in their classes in front of a recruiting expert. The interviews last 30 minutes a piece and recruiters are given the opportunity to ask questions they deem appropriate. Students are then given a short debriefing period where the recruiter advises them on what they can do better. If you are interested in participating in the mock interviews, contact Kiersten Nielsen.
