Database Administrator

International Students:
No
Application Deadline:
1 Aug 2008
Job Description:

Position: Database Administrator

Description: Maintenance and optimization of MySQL database(s) for use with a web server.

Useful skills/knowledge:
SQL
MySQL database
Apache
PHP

Requirements: The administrator will be responsible for ensuring database uptime and integrity, preventing bottlenecks, and seeking to provide as timely a response to the end user as possible.

The applicant should have a working knowledge of SQL and MySQL, as well as an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of the different storage engines. The databases will be accessed primarily by a PHP backend, so an understanding of that language would be very beneficial.

As the site's userbase has the potential to grow rapidly, it will be important that the applicant have an understanding of various optimization techniques and best-practices, including backup, replication, and load balancing. With this in mind, the applicant must also be willing to work in an “on call” relationship with us in order to resolve any problems that arise as quickly as possible.

The existing database works quite well but may not be configured optimally. The applicant must be experienced in efficiently planning the architecture of a SQL schema, and will be expected to evaluate and report regularly on the status of the databases, and how their structure can be improved.

The ability to keep to a time line and meet deadlines is extremely important.
