Mentored research opportunities double in the BYU Computer Science Department

In the last several years, donations from outside sources, comprised
of generous friends, alumni, and industrial partners, have allowed the
BYU Computer Science Department to experience unprecedented growth in
mentored research. From the 2006-2007 academic year to the 2007-2008
academic year alone, the number of mentored research positions made
possible by outside sources doubled from 30 to 61. The expansion of
mentored learning reflects the department’s goal to fulfill former-LDS
Church President Gordon B. Hinckley’s hope that “very soon every
student will have a unique BYU mentoring opportunity that will increase
both the rate and depth of their learning.”

BYU animated short wins Nicktoons’ Viewers’ Choice and Producers’ awards

BYU fans and others voted the BYU animation program's short film "Pajama
Gladiator" to the Viewers' Choice Award in Nicktoons Network's animation
festival yesterday. If you missed the film,

Abstract: On the same planet where there are 1.4 billion Internet users, a far less fortunate 1.4 billion people survive below the World Bank's extreme poverty line. Computing technology has transformed the lives of the wealthiest people on the planet, but it remains out of reach and irrelevant for the poorest. How do you design user interfaces for an illiterate migrant worker? Can you keep five rural schoolchildren from fighting over one PC? What value is technology to a farmer earning a dollar a day?...
