Computing That Serves

Career Seminar: “A Technical Perspective on Software Entrepreneurship”

Thursday, March 31, 2011 - 11:00am

David Mitchell
Founder and CTO
Bungee Labs Corporation

Ken Rodham

As a founder of 3 start-up software companies, Dave Mitchell will discuss his experiences from founding to sale, and/or dissolution.  Each Company described brings with it a unique perspective of success, failure, as well as outcome and opportunity yet to be determined.  Dave will present a technical perspective on software entrepreneurship and how software technology plays into the business and development processes. Dave will discuss the underlying frameworks and architectures that he helped create that shaped the companies he started, and how they influenced the overall software industry.

Dave’s experience over the last 20 years in high technology start-ups can inform and provide insights to any Computer Science student with aspirations of entrepreneurship (either in their own startups or innovating inside larger existing organizations).  The presentation will also be valuable for those who take a more traditional career path but who want to gain a better understanding of the interworking of software companies and the fast-paced, ever changing environment characteristic of the software industry.

Dave founded 3 companies since graduating from Brigham Young University in 1990: ViewSoft Inc., Bungee Labs, Inc. and its successor Bungee Labs Corporation.  Dave has extensive experience and expertise in web application development and software system architectures, specifically in the areas of User Interface Management Systems (UIMS) and Cloud Computing.

Dave was the founder and CTO of ViewSoft (1992-1999) which was sold to Citrix Systems in 1999.  Dave served as a Principle Architect at Citrix after the sale until founding Bungee Labs, Inc.  Bungee Labs developed the world’s first purely cloud-based application development and deployment platform and first used and defined the term “Platform as a Service” (PaaS).  PaaS is now embraced by many of today’s largest software platform companies including Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Amazon, Salesforce, etc.  At Bungee Labs, Dave led the definition and development of the world’s first cloud based language called Sky, with over 1.7 million lines of code, which included a seamless integration with the Eclipse IDE.  Sky will eventually be released as Open Source Software (OSS).

Bungee Labs Corporation, recently co-founded with Dale H. Munk (former CEO of ViewSoft and Bungee Labs, Inc.), purchased the Intellectual Property (IP) from Bungee Labs, Inc. to build a new platform that will enable a single development process for building and targeting both native mobile and web applications for multiple platforms and varying form factors all from a single code base.

Dave is the primary inventor and holder of five US patents in the software, Internet and cloud computing space.  He earned B.S. and M.S. Computer Science degrees from Brigham Young University in 1990 and 1992 respectively.
