Career Seminar: Google-scale Distributed System Design

Google has seen incredible growth in its nearly 12 year history. As it has transformed from a research project at Stanford University to a widely used global search engine, there have been a number of architecture re-designs. We present a retrospective of some of the most significant changes and the constraints that precipitated them. We conclude with an overview of some open problems that will shape the future of Google and web search in general.

 

Biography: 

Laramie is a software engineer working on web search, with a focus on improving the speed at which new content is searchable. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science from BYU and an MRes in computer science from the University of York in the U.K.
