Computer Animation is a broad field with many branches, probably the most well-known being Feature Film animation and live action Visual Effects.  But what does a Visual Effects artist really do on an all CG-animated film?  And which is more valuable in the Visual Effects industry -- technical or artistic skills?  Also, with the recent successes with some computer animated films, and some jobs going overseas, what is the current state of the Animation industry for those looking to join in?  An understanding of these issues and others will be useful to anyone looking to join the animation industry today.

Alan Cheney has been a part of Dreamworks Animation for 13 years as a Visual Effects Developer, and has also had the opportunity to do some software development in the R&D and Production Technology departments. Some of the feature films he has worked on include: How to Train Your Dragon 1 & 2, Rise of the Guardians, Shrek the Third, The Croods, and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3. Alan graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Design 1998, followed by an MS in Computer Science in 2002. He lives in Montrose, California with his wife and 5 kids, and also enjoys composing orchestral music and doing web development for his newly created website
