Since the release of PDF in 1993, Adobe transformed the domain of digital documents.  With the recent success of machine learning, the field once again seems primed for transformation.  In this talk, after giving context with a brief history of the digital document, we will discuss the exciting ongoing research taking place in Adobe Research to help revolutionize the digital document.  This will include recent work to extract the structure of documents for enable new applications such as document reflow and improved accessibility.  We will finish giving a view of the possible future of documents.


Dr. Scott Cohen is a Principal Scientist and manager of the Vision Group in Adobe Research. He co-developed the Photoshop Quick Selection Tool for interactive object selection in images. Prior to joining Adobe in 1999, he received a Ph.D. degree in computer science and a B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford University.

Brian Price is a Senior Research Scientist in Adobe Research specializing in computer vision. He developed technologies that have gone into many Adobe products including the Select and Mask tool in Photoshop, the Smart Selection and Auto Select tools in Photoshop Mix, and the Refine Edge and Key Cleaner features in AfterEffects. Prior to coming to Adobe, he received his PhD degree in computer science from Brigham Young University.
