Description: The Internet Security Research Lab (ISRL) at Brigham Young University conducts research at the intersection of security, cryptography, and usability, with an emphasis on building and evaluating systems that real people can use securely. Our work combines system design, empirical measurement, and user studies to understand how modern authentication and encryption technologies function in practice. Current research includes: Building demonstration prototypes of attacks against password managers and passkeys to evaluate real-world risks and inform stronger defenses, Measuring the deployment, security properties, and usability of passwordless authentication technologies such as passkeys, Designing and analyzing decentralized key management and encryption protocols used in blockchain systems, Studying user perceptions of cryptographic deniability and digital signatures, and understanding when users prefer one over the other, and Developing access control mechanisms for AI chatbots to ensure secure and appropriate use that protects privacy.
