Dr. Wilkerson earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Accounting with an Information Systems emphasis from BYU (1994) and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona (2008). Before his doctoral studies, he spent ten years as a software engineer and consultant. He founded The Object Center in 2000, a consulting firm specializing in object technology and Java-based development. He became a Sun Certified Java instructor in 1998 and co-founded the Utah Java Users Group in 1999. He then spent six years as an MIS professor at Penn State Erie, teaching systems analysis and advanced application development. He later returned to industry as a software-engineering leader, serving as Senior Development Manager at Workfront and Director of Software Engineering at Rakuten Marketing.
He joined BYU in 2018. His consulting work has spanned startups to Fortune 500 companies, including the U.S. Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, GMAC, J.P. Morgan Chase, Iomega, several agencies with the State of Utah, and Ancestry.com. His current work focuses on agentic programming and AI-native development —how software development changes as AI systems take on a larger role in building software. He is the author of Agentic Programming —From Prompts to Production: A Path to AI Fluency. The book introduces a five-level model of AI fluency and the agentic harnesses that make higher levels of AI-assisted delegation reliable.
