Biography

“Over the past ten years, Jon Morrey has led various engineering teams at FamilySearch in the applied technical research and the Family Tree areas. Before joining FamilySearch, Jon worked as a software engineer and manager for Amazon in Seattle, Washington, and Backcountry.com in Park City, Utah. Jon has been developing software professionally since 1997. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah, but he claims his heart has always been with BYU. Jon has worked with students and professors in the BYU Computer Science department dating back to his time at Amazon.

In his current position as manager of the Advanced Technology Research team at FamilySearch, Jon oversees exploratory software projects for large-scale advancements in family history research and productivity. Examples of his team's projects include natural language processing (NLP) applications, optical character recognition (OCR) of historical documents, handwriting recognition, and graph databases, to name a few. Although his day-to-day work at FamilySearch is highly technical, Jon never misses an opportunity to help people with their own family history.

Jon served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico City.”
